Case Study: PPS - Revitalizing Public Spaces
Project for Public Spaces is the leading thinker and designer of parks, plazas and central squares; buildings and civic architecture; transportation; and public markets. Founded 25 years ago, PPS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining public places that build communities. PPS has helped over 1,000 communities in 44 states and 12 countries improve their parks, markets, streets, transit stations, libraries and countless other public spaces.
Their growth was not matching the need in the environment. They came to us and asked us to help them do several tasks:
- develop a growth strategy
- develop innovative approaches to their marketplace and business services,
- involve their key stakeholders in shaping that strategy and
- Rethink their organization, management and infrastructure to build their capability and delivery effectiveness.
After doing our homework about their history, products and services, the finances and high level business information flows, we started with interviews senior management and key board members and finally all staff and gave them feedback on their core strengths and capabilities and the issues facing them.
Looking for leverage points we decided upon a dual change and renewal strategy: Work with the leadership to redesign the organization and in parallel begin the strategic planning process in phases. We settled on a high performance organization structure design and a redesigned executive team promoting a high potential associate as COO. After a series of presentations, discussions and upgrades, we installed the new organization in 4 months. They new structure has been very well received and morale and productivity is the highest ever. We have also implemented an initial strategy and are now building for a more formal long term strategic planning process with stakeholders.
